Large Magellanic Cloud Bump Cepheids: Probing the Stellar Mass-Luminosity Relation

چکیده

We present the results of non-linear pulsation modelling of 20 bump Cepheids in the LMC. By obtaining a optimal fit to the observed V, R MACHO lightcurves we have placed tight constraints on stellar parameters of M , L, Teff and well as quantities of distance modulus and reddening. We describe the mass-luminosity relation for core-He burning for intermediate mass stars. The mass-luminosity relation depends critically on the level of mixing within the stellar interior over the course of the main-sequence lifetime. Our sample is significantly more luminous than predicted by classical stellar evolutionary models that do not incorporate extension to the convective core. Under the paradigm of convective core overshoot our data implies Λc of 0.65±0.03l/Hp. We derive a LMC distance modulus of 18.55±0.02. Subject headings: Cepheids:pulsation stellar:evolution

The Luminosity Scale of Cepheid Variable Stars: a Revision

The period-luminosity-color relation for classical Cepheids is discussed in terms of a recent redeterminations of the distance moduli of open clusters with Cepheid members. The distance moduli of eight clusters with well established Cepheid members were determined from Stromgren four-color and Hp photometry of the B stars. Possible sources of systematic errors in these distance moduli are discu...

Bump Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds Metallicities, the Distances to the Lmc and Smc, and the Pulsation-evolution Mass Discrepancy

We utilize nonlinear pulsation models to reproduce the observed light and color curves for two samples of bump Cepheid variables, 19 from the Large Mag-ellanic Cloud and 9 from the Small Magellanic Cloud. This analysis determines the fundamental parameters mass, luminosity, effective temperature, metallicity, distance and reddening for the sample of stars. The use of light curve shape alone to ...

Nonlinear model pulsations for long-period Cepheids II. Magellanic Cloud Cepheids

Nonlinear, radiative models for long–period Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds were constructed and the theoretical light and velocity curves were compared with observations. We assumed a metal content Z = 0.005, and two mass–luminosity M–L relations: one was obtained from stellar evolution calculation with convective overshooting models, and the other, which gives an even larger L for the same ...

On the Enhancement of Mass Loss in Cepheids Due to Radial Pulsation. Ii. the Effect of Metallicity

It has been observed that Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds have lower masses for the same luminosity than those in the Milky Way. The model, from Neilson & Lester (2008), of pulsation– driven mass loss for Cepheids is applied to theoretical models of Cepheids with metallicity consistent with the Milky Way and Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The mass–loss model is analyzed using the metallic...

Non-Linear Cepheid Period-Luminosity Relation and the Interaction of Stellar Photosphere with Hydrogen Ionization Front

The Cepheid period-luminosity (P-L) relation is regarded as a linear relation (in log[P]) for a wide period range from ∼ 2 to ∼ 100 days. However, several recent controversial works have suggested that the P-L relation derived from the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids exhibits a non-linear feature with a break period around 10 days. Here we review the evidence for linear/non-linear P-L rel...
